Ground mounted solar systems are much less common than rooftop and are mainly used in the larger Utility, C&I sectors of the market, although rural or outer urban based Small Businesses can sometimes benefit from a ground mounted system. Often, a customers roof may not be suitable for a rooftop installation and they have adjacent land that is being underused, if at all.

The advantages of a ground mounted system are:

  • Greater flexibility with orientation
  • Easier cleaning and maintenance

The disadvantages are:

  • The need for soil testing
  • Added cost of concrete footings and trenching
  • Soil subsidence
